@kdfrawg That's my permanent setting, automatically show & hide the dock, but on the right instead of the bottom. Had to do a forced restart to get it back.
Today I made a DiskWarrior Recovery drive by repartitioning a 16 GB USB 3.0 thumb drive. I shaved off 2 GB for that job. It certainly boots very quickly.
Had to elevate the iMac to get it to a decent working height, sat it on top of an Android tablet box. Plus I found I could fit the Logitech AudioHub I've had for years underneath & behind the iMac with just enough clearance to access the USB 3·0 ports at the back.
The AudioHub is a 2.1 stereo /subwoofer speaker; powered USB 2·0 hub & external sound card. Plug it into a USB port & select it in System Preferences>Sound.
Rated at 15 watts RMS it really kicks out much better audio than the standard speakers.

For the record, these pics are from Google Images but I do own a camera & iPod that are identical to those shown.
The stereo speakers slide in & out about 4 cm on each side.

Not accustomed to reasonably powerful desktop Macs, I've just realised why my new iMac lacks the Intel Iris integrated graphics card as fitted to the laptop range. Because it doesn't need a low power mode as it's mains-powered. #duh
TheRadeon Pro 555 is way better than the previous model's integrated graphics.

Performing first clone of iMac, it's going to a USB 2·0 HD. Amazon confirms they have shipped its replacement USB 3·0 interface enclosure, but it's two weeks out since I opted for the cheapest delivery method. Also doing first Time machine backup, to a 3 TB USB 3·0 ext drive. I'm using an in-between* ext HD for storage of large items: it connects via Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adaptor plus a Thunderbolt 1 to FireWire 800 adaptor.
*In-between as in faster than USB 2·0 but slower than USB 3·0.
iMac startup drive shows its capacity as 1.03 TB, indicating the presence of an extra 32 GB on top of the standard 1 TB. The previous model's SSD portion of the Fusion drive was 24 GB, 32 is better.
