@indigo It’s less of a cost when the HD is a dead one

Checked the iPad for available update, it said nothing new. Connected it to the MacBook Air through iTunes & the update was available. Tried on the iPad again, the system refreshed itself & the update became visible.
@kdfrawg With my 2008 MBP I lost two tiny screws when I bumped the container holding them. I later discovered the screws that hold a 2.5-in HD together are the same length & thread, the only difference being they have a torx drive head instead of a Phillips head.

@matigo The shuffle & repeat buttons are hidden in a less than obvious place and repeat each track had been selected previously.
I had trouble with my iPod Touch playing in the car today: it kept repeating each song, I had to manually advance each track & you can’t do that without taking your eyes off the road. Dangerous! Mr Google told me how to fix it & now all is well.
@indigo I have a 2008 pre-Unibody 15-in MacBook Pro. That’s kept at my mother’s place. It needed a new battery so I got one for $44, this lasted four whole charge cycles before the system started insisting that I “service the battery.”
Which I did with a $75 battery from another supplier. That was much better, it behaves like a proper battery.
A decent new battery, installation of 6 GB of RAM and a 240 GB SSD make that machine quite effective.
Batteries don’t have to cost the earth to work.

Now for a cuppa. Chamomile & rosehip, with a touch of Vimto flavouring syrup to cool down the mix. It’s no substitute for tea, of course, but there’s no sleep and throat-affecting caffeine.
