I have extra-greasy fingers which tend to mess up an iPad screen in no time at all. I found a ballpoint pen with a rubber stylus and am using that, I'm mostly a one-finger typist anyway. That said, the secondary characters on the iPad keyboard work better with a finger.
@streakmachine I updated the iPod Touch first, in case there were issues. Then the SE followed by the iPad. The OS is a true game-changer on the iPad.
