@kdfrawg The first colour Mac I had was my school-teacher sister's no longer needed (they'd gone PC) Performa 5400. That had a variable screen. Depending on how it felt at the time it would be either the expected 15-inch or it would shrink to about 9-inches.
When the display died I got my first G3 iMac.

@gtwilson My eyes can only take in so much. I need reading glasses for computer work and anything bigger than 24-inches means I have to move further away from the screen, quite negating the purpose of the thing.

@jmreekes A year ago our Men's Shed group bought a 21.5-inch iMac. As the needs for it are not intensive, a 1 TB HDD & 8 GB of RAM were considered to be plenty. But if I were buying for myself, I'd get a Fusion drive & 16 GB of RAM at a minimum. I find the 27-inch to be too big.

@kdfrawg Whereas while I have hundreds of desktop pictures, some I have taken, others are either imported or just plain stolen.

@jmreekes You're correct re the 21.5-inch models, however the new 27-inch iMacs can still be upgraded by the user. They'll take up to 32 GB in four slots.
