@hybotics 2012 onward would be advisable. That's when the Retina models began appearing. These, of course, lack optical drives but any USB optical drive should work fine, no drivers needed.

@streakmachine I don't know about the 7 years of spares rule, I do know that in Australia, Apple still advertises its stuff as having a 12-month warranty period even though consumer laws state categorically that the statutory warranty on all new products is 24 months.
If challenged re the 12 month period, Apple caves in, though.

@streakmachine Such replacement motherboards might be a bit thin on the ground after 7 years. I used my MBP mostly was a desktop machine, lid closed & a 20" monitor attached. So its replacement by a Retina 4k 21.5" iMac is a logical progression.

Tomorrow I fire up the new garden tool for the first time. I bought it last weekend & assembled it today. There's a common power & drive unit, with a 34 cc 2-stroke petrol engine and five swappable attachments: lawn edger; line trimmer; brushcutter; extension pole chainsaw & a hedge trimmer.
@streakmachine Be very wary of such things, I had a 2011 15.4" MBP 2.0 GHz i7 with 12 GB of RAM, it could take up to 16 GB.
The reason for caution is that model was the first to use lead-free solder & they got it wrong. Mine eventually died in August last year when the soldered connection between the motherboard & video card failed.
Apple's only fix was a motherboard replacement, which was offered free until Feb 2016. It was not a new motherboard, just a different one with similar failure potential.

@hybotics I'm assuming that since it's rented accommodation, that a Murphy bed isn't an option. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murphy_bed

@larand One such compromise is the closeness of a futon to the floor. As an ageing overweight arthritic individual I have great difficulty getting up from down so low.

Proviso: only works if you're a user of the 1Password monthly subscription service. No good for me, I have a 1P licence instead, so I have no 1P account to log in to.
1Password will add the "have I been pwned" feature to their Watchtower in future releases of the software.
