Reminds me of my last full-time job. The final 18 months out of 31 years was spent locating "batch faults," ones with a common allocated cable identification pair range. In most cases it was unofficial copper recyclers either cutting or cutting & removing cable sections of a few 100 metres at a time. They didn't want cables with a grease-filling between the conductors as it was unnecessary weight, but generally they never knew what type they were cutting into until the cut was made. In most cases the cables were between 200 & 400 twisted pairs.
