The state government road authority closed off the freeway bypass here last week for major resurfacing. They said it was better this way, doing it when traffic is at a traditional low level.
Apparently it would have taken up to a month for the works if done with lane closures but still allowing traffic to use the bypass. They planned on closing it from Wed Jan 4 to Friday Jan 6 but favourable weather enabled them to get it done in two days.
Great relief to those who had to traverse the town via the old highway, because that was bumper-to-bumper for most of the daylight hours while the freeway was closed.
