This is wot done it. 
A stone, collected on Friday while crossing a ridge of gravel made by a road grader on a narrow dirt road. I had to cross over the ridge to get to the side of the road that was wide enough to travel along.
Mechanic said that in effect I had a stone engine mount when reverse was selected & the engine torque in reverse jammed it in tight, negating the effect of the rubber mounts.
