I tried one last, desperate measure to get back my Bluetooth: download & install Sierra 10.12.6.03 from the Mac App Store. I have Bluetooth restored but I don't know how long for! Although, with the previous restoration I wasn't able to turn BT off from either the menubar or the preference pane. This time I can do so.

Bluetooth dongles work, I was playing around with a BT 2.0 dongle & it was showing up as working. But I put it down somewhere safe & can't find it now.

Don't bother remembering it. The fucking setting didn't stick. After restart, no Bluetooth. It's not that important, I just use a mouse with it sometimes.

A strange fix was applied. Searching Apple Support forums I discovered it's possible to invoke a Bluetooth debug setting by holding down the shift & option buttons while clicking on Bluetooth in the menubar. From there, "if BT is available" you can reset the Bluetooth module.
The trick was to get the module recognised. I created a very temporary new user account & found Bluetooth worked when logged into it. So I reset the module from that account, logged out then back into the regular user account. Bluetooth now works!

I'll admit I'm stumped. MacBook Air claims to have lost Bluetooth. There's a squiggly line thru the icon on the menubar & when selected a message reads "Bluetooth not available." Yet if I boot from another SSD of an earlier OS version, it's fine. Tried Time Machine backups, repairs to the directory via DiskWarrior, resetting the SMC, removal of the Bluetooth .plist file followed some 10 minutes later with a restart. Nothing works.
I had this problem previously with the now dead MacBook Pro but I can't recall how I fixed it.
I have a Genius Bar appointment for Friday afternoon at the nearest Apple Store.

No. It's the nanny-state government that's behind this alleged safety routine.

Mac User Group has been informed that unless mains-attached equipment used by the group or by presenters has undergone compulsory 12-monthly electrical testing & tagging for safe usage, it will not be permitted to be connected. Thus far, it only applies to the main monthly meeting. In my case that would be the charger for the MacBook Air.

I'd be able to manage without that, the Mac has good battery life & can also be run/charged from a thing called a ChugPlug Image

The Men's Shed has their own internal Test & Tag equipment & personnel but due to insurance issues, can't test & tag for use outside the shed environment.

After costs, it's not financially viable for someone set up as an electrical safety test & tagger to charge less than $15 per item tested.

My 80 GB iPod Classic is still usable even though the screen is leaking fluid inside. Somewhere I have a 16 GB 5th Gen iPod Nano but I haven't seen that for about three years…… The 6th Gen iPod Touch is OK but the battery life sucks compared to the Classic.

Just downloaded & installed Google's Backup & Sync app on my iMac & MacBook Air. It replaces the Google drive app, which in turn is converted to an alias pointing back to Backup & Sync app. I have chosen to backup & sync my Google Drive folder so nothing really changes.

Apparently an encoding issue with an openssl upgrage.
