Nope, not compatible with the audio system; which shows a message: Check USB. Doesn't matter, 6th gen iPod Nano has a clip on the back anyway.

Bunging some music onto the 3rd gen iPod Shuffle (the one without controls). Going to see if it works with the car audio in iPod mode.

Here it is. I can (perhaps) call it a Mazda 929. Image

Upgrade to TechTool Pro, version 9.6.1 now available with support for High Sierra & APFS drives.

Unlikely to be much different under a helmet.

A new antenna for that car is $49. I modified a shorter $25 one that screwed into the same receptacle on the roof as the proper one. The dashboard is two different shades of grey & reflects horribly in the windscreen. A dashmat will fix that.

Hadn’t had the car more than 6 hours yesterday & I’ve already broken bits of it. The radio antenna is mounted at the front of the roof & tilts back so it’s about 30° from horizontal. Reversing out of a shady area, it got tangled in shrubs & broke off.

Phone calls do get directed through the audio system if you select iPod mode. It seems the iPhone’s microphone is sensitive enough to do the job.
That said, I’ll not use it that way. The iPod mode will be for music/podcasts/audiobooks from an iPod. I’ll use the simple sunvisor-mounted Bluetooth hands-free for phone stuff & step-by-step directions from nav apps.
In iPod mode the audio system buttons do stuff related to iPods, as do the steering wheel-mounted audio controls.

I had been using my iPod Nano in the car, via the aux input, but I’ve discovered it has an iPod mode as well that becomes available when an iPod/iPhone is connected to the built-in USB port.
In the case of the iPhone, audio out comes over the speakers, great for navigation software. I haven’t tried whether phone calls work the sane way. I doubt it, on account of the need for a microphone.

Classic Aussie breakfast. Half a mango and a nice strong AeroPress brew.
