I used a Thunderbolt cable, the iPad Air has a USB-C port rated at up to 10 Gbps if used with a suitable cable. the supplied USB-C charge cable supplied with my M1 MacBook Air & with the iPad Air only transfer data at USB 2.0 speeds, up to 480 Mbps.
