Telstra, the largest of three carriers in Oz, is shutting down 2G at the end of this month. Optus, the next largest keeps it until April next year & Vodafone-Hutchison will then be the only provider of 2G & their coverage is less than the two main players. My mother's mobile phone is a 2G one (with a 3G SIM) but since she hasn't used it for 12 months, it just won't get reconnected.
