@phoneboy Before Hutchison Telecoms (trading as Orange) merged with Vodafone in Australia, they offered a hybrid cordless phone. When in range of the home's base station(s) they used PSTN and outside that range they used the Orange GSM network. This was only available in limited areas: capital cities only.
