Eight days ago a significant rain event shorted out the mains-powered igniter for my externally mounted instantaneous tankless gas hot water system. Rainwater got into a join between a previously-covered extension cord & the unit’s power cord that was too short to reach the external power outlet.
I replaced the cable & fitted a weatherproof junction cover & after resetting the circuit breaker observed an audible wooof sound as the gas standby section ignited.
Today I inexplicably had no hot water. I checked the new connections & it seems either there’s something wonky with the power outlet or the new extension lead. I deduced this by temporarily connecting a very heavy-duty 30 metre long extension lead coming from a power outlet in the bathroom. This worked fine & hot water was restored.
The weekend project will be to see if the heavy-duty cable works in the external outlet. If not, I’ll buy a heavy-duty 5 metre cable and run it out through the bathroom window.
