Gov't-owned telco tried aluminium cables for major works on the basis that it's lighter overall weight would make it easier to handle. Naturally, it didn't work out that way: for one thing it's just not as conductive as copper. Al conductors of 0·51 mm diameter were required to replace 0·4 mm copper ones. Plus the conductors were fragile & not fully compatible with the cable splicing machines we used. Somehow I managed to avoid working on the shit despite being employed by that mob for over 30 years. All-in-all a complete WOFTAM*
